Another busy day at BVE North, kicked off in style by TV drama doyen Nicola Shindler. With a production slate that includes Queer As Folk, Scott & Bailey and Bedlam it’s fair to say that the founder of Red Production Company knows a thing or two about “Developing Successful Scripts For TV”, the subject of her “Writers’ Focus” talk this morning in the Production Theatre.

During her session she looked to help new writers enhance their craft. When asked what should or shouldn’t be included in a script in order for it to become a success she argued that there really are no boundaries. “Make it as big or as small as you want,” she said. “But make sure it’s written in your voice and has a strong authorial tone. Write about what you passionately believe in.”

As befits a trade show of this magnitude, various deals have been completed over the last two days. It was made known late last night for example that Sony specialist dealer CVP has ordered 100 units of Sony’s new PMW-F5 cameras while Top-Teks has placed an order for four PMW-F55s, both in anticipation of strong interest from people wanting to shoot 4k. Both of the F-series CineAlta camcorders will ship in early 2013.

At the same time Holdan revealed that it has secured an agreement to distribute electronic viewfinders from Dutch company Alphatron through its network of resellers in the UK, Ireland and Northern Europe. Alphatron’s lead product is the EVF-035W, a viewfinder with a 960x640 pixel resolution. Garland Partners is having great success with Teracue low cost HD Contribution links ENC300/DEC300 with the latest order received from Bloomberg.

Things that are catching the eye today include: Garland Partner’s LiveU 3G uplink technology, which now has 4G capability and was used to cover the US elections and Hurricane Sandy (Stand C59); Autoscript’s EPIC (Enhanced Prompting Information Centre) which is on show in the UK for the first time (Stand E8); and, of course, Jigsaw’s Pick’n’Mix sweets selection in the Café which, like last year, is a truly great idea.

If you are coming down this afternoon there’s still plenty of great stuff to see. In the IOV Theatre at 15:00, Christina Fox, in her session ‘Essential Camera Skills For Freelancers’, will explore practical filming techniques and how to get the best results from your equipment.

Not only that but there are sessions on 3D and lighting to attend or you could even give your CV a quick wash and brush up on stand C80 in the Skills Zone where BECTU and The Crewing Company are still offering free 15-minute advice slots. You can also see demos of OTT Video Delivery Solutions from Cisco, Viewcast, Media Excel and Allegro as well as the Imagen2 and Orbital Media Asset Management and Publishing system (C59).

There are also various prize draws, giveaways and bottles of beer to be won. Talking of prizes, huge congratulations to Daniel Mears, the winner of yesterday’s BVE North £500 training prize. Another draw will take place at 4pm today.

BVE North 2012 is proving to be a really vibrant and positive show. Doors are open until 16:30, why not pop along? It would be a shame to miss it.

Next year’s show takes place on 12 and 13 November 2013.

See you there.

Tuesday 13th November 2012

As predicted, it’s been a busy old morning at BVE North. And a varied one too.

In the IOV Theatre Richard Laurence, the managing director of InnSight Television, discussed the nuts and bolts of the UK’s new Local TV stations. Amongst the revelations were that Local TV, to his mind, is not “really a small business thing” and that having spoken to many of the bidders, “nobody, to a man, wanted a single multiplex operator” to run the network, although that is exactly what they’ve got.

Other areas of concern include whether the BBC will be able to buy Local TV content as has been suggested. However, citing the success of Belfast’s Northern Vision, Laurence said that he expects this incarnation of Local TV to be more successful than the last one.

Soon after, over in the Production Theatre, UKTV multi-platform commissioning Lead Louise Brown was providing an insight into how to pitch ideas to channels like Watch and Dave. “We want things that cut through and are noisy,” she said.

When it comes to multi-platform, apps need to compliment a show and “keep eyeballs on the TV screen”, she said, rather than taking them away. Citing the Britain’s Got Talent buzzer app as an example Brown also highlighted the need for ideas that keep the programme brand going during the week and can also “actively generate cash”

With London 2012 still fresh in the memory, BBC Sport technical executive Charlie Cope got his audience all misty eyed in the Broadcast Theatre with footage from the glorious Summer of Sport. He then detailed how the move to Salford just six months before the Olympics, while not being ideal, had actually helped coverage by allowing production silos to be replaced by an all encompassing sports production system.

The legacy of London 2012, he said, was that we “changed the perception of choice and personalization. “The challenge is to be able to provide that [choice] again [on future events].”

Out on the show floor, things that are catching the eye today include the buzz around the GoPro stand, the Photron SA-X camera system from Slowmo (which records 20,000 frames per second at 1024 x 576 resolution) and a quite beautiful ice sculpture of a Canon C300 camera.

There’s a world premiere here too, with Rode (Stand E17) showing its Reporter Microphone, a die-cast dynamic hand-held interview microphone with an omnidirectional pickup pattern, for the first time anywhere.

Of course, deals are being done as well. Outside broadcast and satellite uplink specialist SIS LIVE for one has signed up for a Clear-Com intercom solution from Tyrell for its new MediaCityUK headquarters and its facility in Milton Keynes.

It’s also possible to get career advice here at BVE North. Over at the Show Bar from 4pm today you’ll find a Freelancers Meet-Up at which Media Parents will be chatting about CVs, contracts and flexible working.

As far as ‘free stuff’ is concerned, why not head over to Root6’s stand (E54) where a scratch card competition offers instant prizes – including free beer – and the chance to win a whole edit suite.

Enjoy the show
